تعرف هذه الأهرام اليوم باسم (أهرام البجراوية) نسبة لقرية البجراوية قرب مدينة شندي التي تبعد حوالي المائتين كيلومتر إلى الشمال الشرقي من العاصمة السودانية الخرطوم. أما اسمها العلمي فهو (أهرامات مروي) وهي من آثار مملكة نوبية عظيمة تدعى (مملكة كوش).مملكة كوش التي سيطرت على الجزء الجنوبي من حوض النيل إلى الجنوب من مصر الفرعونية نشأت قبل ألف سنة من الميلاد تقريباً، غير أنها لم تكن المملكة الأولى في هذه المنطقة وإنما هي امتداد لحضارات نوبية أعرق أقدمها حضارة نشأت قبل حوالي ثلاثة آلاف سنة قبل الميلاد في مدينة (كرمة) التي لا تزال آثارها الباقية قرب الحدود المعاصرة بين مصر والسودان تدهش علماء الآثار بتخطيطها المميز  قبل 1500 عام من الميلاد أمر الفرعون تحتمس الثالث ببناء مدينة نبتة (بفتح الباء) عقب احتلاله لأراضي النوبة لتكون مركزاً للإقليم الجنوبي من مصر، وبقي شمال السودان (الذي عرف بكوش فيما بعد) تابعاً للحكم الفرعوني لخمسة قرون كاملة خلفت خلالها العديد من الآثار كهذا المعبد للإله آمون.

في عام 1070 قبل الميلاد أعلن نائب الفرعون عن منطقة كوش استقلال الاقليم عن الإدارة الفرعونية واتخذ من نبتة (التي تقع جوار مدينة كريمة الحالية ، 400 كيلومتر إلى الشمال من الخرطوم) عاصمة له ، واحتفظ ملوك كوش بالعادة الفرعونية المتمثلة في دفن ملوكهم في مقابر ملكية فارهة على شكل أهرامات، وكان بنائهم قريباً من النموذج المصري كهذه الأهرام في منطقة نوري
